About

Hi! I'm Josu. Biomedical engineer and PhD student, currently working as a researcher. I'm calm, meticulous, hard-working, and a decent programmer. I do my best to live consciously, mindful of others and the environment, and always caring about putting my skills at the service of the community and society. I enjoy reading, traveling, thinking things through, and also organizing stuff — sometimes a bit too much.

Please have a look around. If anything here resonates with you, or you think we could work on something together, feel free to reach out — I'd love to hear from you :).

Academic profile

Methodical and hard-working, with strong organizational, problem-solving, and code-design skills. I have experience across the full data pipeline — preprocessing, analysis, and visualization — as well as in code development and documentation.

My programming experience includes the analysis and modeling of human behavior in the context of suicide prevention, compartmental modeling of intracranial pulsatility, and the simulation of brain structures through spiking neural networks.

Work

Predoctoral Researcher Universidad Carlos III de Madrid Nov 2023 – Present Currently enrolled in a PhD program within the Signal Processing Group (GTS-UC3M) in the field of human behavior analysis. The work will be focused on the research and development of AI-based applications to predict the risk of suicidal behavior, among others.
Research Intern at UC3M Universidad Carlos III de Madrid Oct 2022 – May 2023 As my Bachelor's thesis, I developed a compartmental model to investigate intracranial pulsatility, gaining fundamental insight into cerebrospinal fluid dynamics with the aim of better understanding CSF-related disorders. The work involved medical image processing to extract flow data from MR images.
Research Intern at NISL Hanyang University Feb – Jul 2022 I was granted an internship at the Neural Intelligence Systems Lab in Hanyang University, which develops computational models based on the neural circuit principles that govern sensorimotor systems in flying insects. During my time at NISL, I modeled a spiking neural network that simulates the central complex in flies, capable of responding to head direction changes.

Studies

Master in Machine Learning for Health Universidad Carlos III de Madrid 2023 – 2024 I obtained this master’s to specialize in the use of AI tools, focusing their application on the processing of medical data, signals and images. Some of the fields explored include classic machine learning methods, deep learning networks, natural language processing, surgical navigation tools, optimization and computer vision. I conducted my master thesis under the GTS lab working on human behavior modeling for suicide prediction.
Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering Universidad Carlos III de Madrid 2018 – 2023 Graduated in Biomedical Engineering at UC3M where I learned about very diverse topics in the biomedical domain, including image processing, biosensors and tissue engineering. Some of the programs and languages I learned are: MATLAB, 3D Slicer, ImageJ, PyMOL, Chimera and RStudio. On top of the academic aspect, I also had the chance to study one year abroad at Hanyang University, Seoul, and to conduct two research works that gave me experience on spiking neural networks (internship at NISL) and compartmental modeling (Bachelor’s thesis).
Exchange Program Hanyang University 2021 – 2022 I spent 10 months in Seoul as part of an international program studying and researching at Hanyang University. During my time abroad, I improved my English proficiency and gained important skills on adaptability, initiative and social abilities. On top of that, I was able to immerse myself in the Korean culture and therefore acquired an open mindset with a broader perspective.
PEAC · Complementary Education Instituto Juan de la Cierva 2009 – 2016 During 7 years, I had the opportunity to participate in PEAC, a program developed by the Community of Madrid as a voluntary, free, complementary education that enriches the standard curriculum, providing students with an opportunity to experience, research and create. PEAC stimulates creativity and divergent thinking in different learning areas such as the scientific-technologic, artistic, humanistic-literary and social skills.

Get to know me

Josué

Born in Alicante (Spain), raised in Madrid. Steady and perfectionist by nature, I like organizing (or cleaning) stuff just to calm myself. I read often, think more, and write occasionally. I'm drawn to nature, which probably fuels my desire to protect it. I enjoy long hikes and deep travel, often finding beauty in the world around me.

The Latin words scintilla novae humanitatis, spark of a new humanity (Pope Leo XIV), work for me as a guiding principle in my life: an exhortation to observe the world, reach the truth within it, and transform it into a better place.
